Applicant Guidelines

Please review the following prior to submitting an application:

New Students enrolling for the first time in the Summer Earn & Learn Program must be between the ages of 13-16 years old. Returning students that are between 16-18 years old may register as Mentors.

All applicants must be registered with the UF Extension Little Growers Inc 4-H Club through 4H ONLINE, Prior to applying for Summer Earn & Learn Program

All applicant parents must complete an individual summer earn & learn application for each child in their home that is eligible and interested to in participation

Participants who are selected to participate and their parent or legal guardian must attend the Mandatory Orientation to be held May 24, 2024-6:00 PM -7:00 PM - - LOCATION TBA (Failure to attend Orientation could result in dismissal from the program)

Participants who are selected to participate must attend ALL Mandatory activities marked by an asterisk* in the schedule listed below. ( activities and scheduled start and end times are subject to change, but scheduled dates will remain the same.) ( Failure to attend ALL mandatory activities could result in partial or total loss of summer earn and learn awarded stipend)

Participants who are selected to participate must treat each other, parents, volunteers and staff with respect and honor ALL established group norms. Disrespect and/or Bullying WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. (failure to follow this guideline could result in immediate dismissal from program and total loss of summer earn and learn awarded stipend)

May 24, 2024 - July 12, 2024
This year, LGI's Summer Earn and Learn Program is themed "EstuaryEcho." This dynamic six-week Summer Earn and Learn Program hosted by Little Growers is an immersive initiative designed to empower teens aged 13-18 as stewards of the environment, focusing on the preservation and sustainability of the Indian River Lagoon. The program emphasizes hands-on experiences, scientific exploration, life skills development and community engagement.
"EstuaryEcho" embodies the concept of the summer earn and learn program as a resonating experience focused on teens learning and echoing their commitment to the protection and sustainability of the Indian River Lagoon. It signifies a ripple effect of environmental awareness and action among the participants.

Week 3: Black in Marine Science (BIMS) Immersion Program & National Park- June 19, 2024 - June 22, 2024
During Week 3 of the LGI Summer Earn & Learn program, students will embark on an exciting journey to explore the rich marine ecosystems and cultural heritage of South Florida. Partnering with Black In Marine Science (BIMS), students will engage with marine scientists, deepening their understanding of marine life and conservation efforts. The highlight of the week is the grand Juneteenth festival hosted by BIMS, where students will actively participate, celebrating cultural diversity and historical significance. Additionally, students will have immersive experiences in two iconic national parks: Biscayne and Everglades. They will embark on a half-day snorkel adventure, exploring vibrant reefs and mangrove ecosystems, while also enjoying a Heritage of Biscayne Cruise, delving into the park's rich history and natural beauty. In the Everglades National Park, students will engage in guided tours and wet walks, led by experienced naturalists, gaining insights into the intricate ecology and cultural heritage of this unique wilderness. Through these hands-on experiences, students will not only deepen their knowledge but also foster a deeper appreciation for marine and terrestrial environments, equipping them to become stewards of conservation in their communities.

Living On My Own (LOMO)
Living On My Own (LOMO) is a hands-on, real-life simulation. In this activity, youth experience their futures in a fun and exciting way. Participants learn how to make healthy and wise lifestyle choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis.
