Applicant Guidelines

Please review the following prior to submitting an application:

New Students enrolling for the first time in the Summer Earn & Learn Program must be between the ages of 12-16 years old. Returning students that are between 16-18 years old may register as Mentors.
All applicants must be registered with the UF Extension Little Growers Inc 4-H Club through 4H ONLINE, Prior to applying for Summer Earn & Learn Program
All applicant parents must complete an individual summer earn & learn application for each child in their home that is eligible and interested to in participation
Participants who are selected to participate must attend the Mandatory Orientation to be held May 26, 2023-5:00 PM -6:00 PM - - EVAN’S CENTER 1361 FLORIDA AVE. NE PALM BAY FL 32905 ( Failure to attend Orientation could result in dismissal from the program)
Participants who are selected to participate must attend ALL Mandatory activities marked by an asterisk* in the schedule listed below. ( activities and scheduled start and end times are subject to change, but scheduled dates will remain the same.) ( Failure to attend ALL mandatory activities could result in partial or total loss of summer earn and learn awarded stipend)
Participants who are selected to participate must treat each other, parents, volunteers and staff with respect and honor ALL established group norms. Disrespect and/or Bullying WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. (failure to follow this guideline could result in immediate dismissal from program and total loss of summer earn and learn awarded stipend)
Spaces are limited. Priority entry into the of summer earn and learn program will be given as follows;
1. Students who are already enrolled through the UF Extension Little Growers Inc 4-H Club through 4H ONLINE, Prior to applying for Summer Earn & Learn Program ( there is a $25 registration fee that must be paid online. If you or your child are receiving snap benefits, SSI, or SSDI and are in need of a fee waiver please complete the online application and opt to mail in payment then Email: littlegrowersinc@gmail.com -Subject Line: "4H APPLICATION FEE WAIVER REQUESTED"- Email Body: Student or Students name, age, address, and best contact # for parent)
2. Mentors who have participated in the program the year prior and are between the ages of 16-18
3. Youth living within a 1-3 mile radius of Little Growers Inc. future garden locations at; 823 Brothers Ave Melbourne Fl, 32901 and 2230 Washington St NE Palm Bay Fl 32905

This year, LGI is placing great emphasis on the marine environment as Brevard County runs along the east coast of Florida along the Atlantic Ocean. Our Summer Earn & Learn Program will focus on Marine Science, Agricultural Sustainability & Leadership Development. The schedule is subject to change.

Week 3: Black in Marine Science (BIMS) Immersion Program - June 14, 2023 - June 16, 2023

BIMS has been helping develop the next generation of Marine Scientists, and they will be coming in to engage with LGI Summer Earn & Learn students. BIMS will reach out to college students who have previously completed a BIP or BIMS SCUBA training and have them travel to South Brevard to speak to LGI students. They will share their experiences with BIMS, inform the youth about what to expect in college, and take part in some hands-on marine science-related activities. This will serve as a professional development and community service activity for the college students, giving them the opportunity to develop skills related to public speaking and science communication. They will also be a great example of representation to the youth that LGI serves. This will be an experience that everyone involved can learn and grow from.

Week 5: Sustainable Work Alliance (SWA)

The Sustainable Workplace Alliance is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that focuses on the environmental, health, and safety training needs of US industries and its workers. SWA has actively supported underserved communities through training and outreach across the United States. This summer, SWA is partnering with LGI to provide our youth with two state-of-the-art trainings. Our students will receive CPR training and certification, and they will each package and take home their very own hurricane food prep barrel.

Living On My Own (LOMO)

Living On My Own (LOMO) is a hands-on, real-life simulation. In this activity, youth experience their futures in a fun and exciting way. Participants learn how to make healthy and wise lifestyle choices similar to those adults face on a daily basis.
